Frequently Asked Question:
Do you photograph siblings with babies in your newborn sessions?
Yes! I love capturing new babies with their older siblings. Your family has just expanded, they are just beginning to bond, it’s so cute!
It can be hard to share your time when you first have a new baby. The first few weeks of bringing a newborn home can be super blurry when you look back on them, by having your very first new family photographs during those early days, you remember how everyone was and the love they showed for each other. When the arguments come, you can look back at these pictures with such fond memories, back to a time where they liked each other!
Of course, it isn’t all plain sailing! Toddlers especially can be tricky around this age, they used to get all your attention and now there’s someone else taking it all. You’ll feel guilty, they’ll be upset…it can be tough! Don’t worry, I’ve seen it all before!
Bring someone to help
If your partner can’t make it, bring along a friend or family member who can help with the children. Your older children will more than likely be photographed at the start of the session (depending on their mood!) and may get bored towards the end. It’s a good idea to have someone available to take them for a drive or just outside for a breather.
Think about when they are at their best
Newborn sessions usually start between 9:30 – 10:00 am, this usually fits in with most toddler naps but it may be that this is smack in the middle of when your toddler usually naps. In which case, you are more likely to get a cranky toddler than a willing toddler. This is also why it’s best to bring someone along to help you, they can always take your toddler off for a drive or even to bed and come back later! They can of course nap on the sofa at the studio, but chances are there will be too much going on for them to want to miss out!
You have spent the first few days with your children, so please do let me know when we discuss the poses I will be using with them together if you think there would be an issue. I only pose your baby in safe poses and I would never put your baby at risk, especially if your your toddler is not yet feeling the love!
Bring plenty of snacks
Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 2-4 hours. Your children will get hungry and it’s best to bring foods that won’t discolour their skin or clothes just in case we decide to get more sibling shots later in the shoot.
Bring more than one outfit
You may want to take them out of the outfit (or outfits) you want them photographed in with their new baby so please do feel free to bring as many clothes as you can carry! This will also ensure they are comfortable after they have been photographed.
Let them be!
You are tired, they are tired, you have that perfect photograph in your head and your little one is not performing. Getting stressed only makes things worse, so try and stay calm and just let them be – you will appreciate the end result so much more when you have beautiful, natural photographs!
