How to choose
the perfect newborn photographer for you
Choosing the perfect newborn photographer for you is difficult when you don’t know what you are supposed to be looking for. I’m sure you have searched online for your local photographers …but now what?
Generally, the best time to book a newborn photographer is whilst you are still pregnant. A good rule of thumb is around your 20 week scan, but if your baby is already here, they may be able to fit you in so it’s worth getting in touch.
Online presence is the easiest first step, take a look at the photographers website, blog and social media accounts.
• Does it have images that you love on it?
• Is it the style you are looking for?
• Are the images consistent?
Have they attended any newborn baby posing and safety training? They probably talk about this on their website or blog. If not, put it on your list of things to ask when you get in touch with them.
Do they have a studio or are they mobile? If they are mobile, do they cover your area? Do you have enough room for their beanbag, lighting, and other equipment. Can you control the temperature in that room? If they have a studio, what is the parking situation like? It’s a minor detail that may not seem like something worth thinking about but your newborn session may be the first time you have left the house with your baby so you do not want the added hassle of having to find a parking space, especially as you will probably be running late anyway!
You are trusting your photographer with your precious little baby, it is so important to ensure that they are insured. We don’t like to think that anything bad will happen but your photographer should be prepared and have public liability insurance like you would expect from any public business. Think of it like car insurance, we have to have it but hope we don’t need it.
Safety will be covered in their newborn training. You should be looking to see whether they have attended hands on 1-2-1 training rather than a workshop where they just observe.
Whilst cost is important, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing your photographer. Custom fine art photography is a luxury and requires some investment. Are their prices shown on their website?
Prints and Products
A lot of people think they want a CD with all the images from a shoot, but in reality do you think you need that many? Will you print them? Will they look as good as if the photographer prints them from their professional lab? The answer is of course no, they will not. Just like when you try and recreate a delicious meal you had at a restaurant, it’s never quite the same!
If you want all the good images from your session, why not think about a photo book or an album or perhaps order prints to create your own. As your baby grows, they are going to want to see what they looked like and will love to sit and flick through the pages of an album with you. If you lose your CD or USB, or it fails, then you have lost your images for good. A CD or USB is not archival and will not last a lifetime.
Once you have got your short list, give them all a call and arrange a meeting, be prepared to leave a short message as they may be in a shoot! If they have a studio, why not use this as a great opportunity to have a look around so you will know what to expect on the day.
Lyndsey was fantastic with our little girl. The studio is lovely and the shoot was a great experience for our new family. We are really pleased with the photos and will treasure the memories Lyndsey captured forever. Thank you
